All the testing and medical costs are covered by my insurance and fundraising efforts, so there is no cost to the donor. You don’t need to know your blood type to get started – in fact, this is a great way to find out what your blood type is if you don’t know. I’m looking for blood type B (same as mine) or O (universal donor). You will have to come to the hospital for a couple days of testing prior to the surgery. When the surgery is scheduled, you’ll only be in the hospital for a few days. Then you’ll need to be in town for some follow up visits for a week or two. Traveling and housing will be covered by me.
To apply to be a donor in Orlando, you simply need to go to the website and fill out the online application. The address is http://www.fhtransplant.com/patient-applications. There’s lots of good info on their site, so browse around.
To apply to be a donor in Atlanta, call Santiba Johnson at 855-366-7989 for a phone interview. You will probably have to leave a message and wait for a call back. If you don’t hear back in 24 hours, call again, and keep calling until you get an answer. For more information, take a look at the Emory Healthcare Website.
Both locations are notorious for not getting back to you right away. Be aggressive! Make sure you tell them you want to donate to Rebecca Ray, birthdate 3-21-1976.
