Sometimes brilliant ideas just don’t come to pass.

When I was researching and brainstorming for things to do at KidsPointe for the two Sundays prior to Thanksgiving, I had what I thought was a brilliant idea.  I wanted to have a KidsPointe Thanksgiving Parade.  You know, like Macy’s, only a little smaller.  Each class was going to have it’s own theme with a float and costumes.  There would be pilgrims in the Mayflower, Indians around a teepee, scarecrows in a cornfield, football players, cheerleaders, turkeys, pumpkins and a kazoo marching band.  We were even going to have knights and princesses as a teaser for the next series starting in January.  All the floats were going to be made of paper mache, and I had already placed an all call for newspaper all over Moncks Corner.  Sounds like a lot of work, doesn’t it?

Yeah, that’s why we’re not doing it.

I just didn’t get going on it in time.  I’m disappointed in myself for not following through on a good idea.  However, I know it would have taken a lot of energy for not much return.  There’s so much more that I need to work on that has to do with actually teaching kids about Jesus.  I know, how ’bout you guys just imagine what it would have looked like, and then we’ll just pretend it actually happened.  That’s a lot less work.

Yeah, you could say that July 31, 2008

So here’s a little bit of what is going on with me.

A key ministry leader has moved on, and I must keep the Tot’s Landing plane flying until we find a replacement.

Just when I thought I might get to go to church again, one of my valued KidsPointe leaders feels that it is time to answer the call to another form of ministry.

We’re starting a Wednesday night children’s ministry. That means choosing a mission, solidifying the curriculum and recruiting a team.

So I’m a little stressed. Despite all of that, I’m choosing not to be worried. God already knew that this was coming, and He’s got it all figured out. That being said, if you’ve been thinking about serving in the children’s ministry, now would be the time.

Okay, so my recap of my vacation is finally over.  There was still plenty more to write about, but enough is enough.  Back to real life.  Today was the first day of our new series at KidsPointe, and IT WAS AWESOME!!!  Please don’t take my use of the Caps Lock lightly – it doesn’t happen very often.  The set looked great – see for yourself!

(Sorry for the picture quality – I’m back to using my camera phone again.)  The skit was really fun, and I got to use a puppet, so I was happy.  The kids seemed to really get into everything.  I’m telling you, this is not your mama’s children’s church.  We are going the extra mile to make sure the kids of Pointe North hear the message and have fun doing it.  Come check us out!

A New Level of Ministry April 23, 2008

Sorry I’ve been a bit scarce lately, but my reason is halfway good.  And I’m about to get a lot scarcer (more scarce?).  I may or may not be leaving the country on the morrow.  (The “may not” is for the bad guys that might be staking me out for an opportunity to break into my apartment and steal my new vacuum and my priceless Muppet memorabilia collection.  Better luck next time, bad guys!  I’ve completely thrown you off this time!)  Anyway, instead of posting, I’ve been using my time in front of the computer to actually do work.  *gasp*

Here’s the deal.  Through an unexpected course of events that have worked entirely in my favor, I have been granted an assistant.  Michele is now transitioning from the creative arts team to the KidsPointe team, and I’m stoked.  After spending the last three weekends holed up in KidsPointe breathing pure contact cement fumes, I am glad to have a full-time extra pair of hands around.  (No, this is not my chosen form of escape – I was making puppets, people!  Quit jumping to conclusions and starting rumors about the “habits” of the children’s pastor.)  What is wrong with me?  I’m all over the place today.

The even greater news is that this comes at an excellent time.  In the spirit of taking risks,I have been blessed with some really fun ideas for KidsPointe.  I’ll reveal all that when the time is right.  I just have to say that as a creative person, it feels so good to have the creative wheels turning again.  Now that I’ve got a semi-decent hold on the logistics of making KidsPointe run, I’m glad that now we can work on making it an awesome experience every week.  By the way, we’ve added a few more faces to the KidsPointe Sunday morning crew, but we need more!  If you’re not serving somewhere, call me!

Amazing Sunday April 1, 2008

Our first Sunday in our new home with our new format was awesome.  It felt so good to create something from start to finish.  I can’t say enough about the volunteers that gave entire days to the cause.  KidsPointe looked amazing, and the kids were in awe.  They even paid better attention because of the stage and the lights – it was more than I could have hoped for.  I messed up a little on the cues, but at least we know there is room for improvement.  I want to hear from you!  KidsPointe team – what did you think?  Parents – what was the reaction from your kiddos?

It’s all coming together March 27, 2008

The amount of work accomplished in the past four days is amazing.  The new KidsPointe is looking great.  I have a great team that has been helping every time I call, and I am so grateful.  I think we all realize that this is a kingdom thing.  Nobody is doing this for themselves, for anyone else, for me. . .it’s all for Him.  I may not know what is coming up, but I do know that this is what we need to be doing right now.  The kids of our community are going to love what we have to offer.  And they’re going to learn about Jesus the whole time.  Here’s an example of what they will see when they walk in the KidsPointe doors:

Linda Biglin and Audra Rheaume painted this beautiful set!  We have had plenty of volunteers coming to do all kinds of tasks.  What I need now is to beef up my Sunday morning team.  No, I don’t mean I’m going to start feeding them donuts and candy, I mean I need more people!  I need performers, narrators, teachers, tech people, VIP room watchers and early morning child care providers.  Not to mention the slots I need to fill for Access for Kids (first Thursday night of each month).  That’s a week from today, people!  AAAAAH!  Help!  Okay, freak out is over, for the moment.

Workin’ for a livin’ March 24, 2008

My posts are bound to be a little boring this week.  Or exciting, depending on how you look at it.  I am typing this post from my new office in our new building, so that’s pretty exciting.  This week is going to be a flurry of activity for all of us as we finish getting the new building ready and transfer the old youth building to the new children’s building.  We had our easter services in rooms with almost no furniture, but that is because some great KidsPointe leaders came on Saturday to move everything to our new location.  When we opened the Uhaul truck to unload it, this is what we found:

gumballtruck.jpg     gumball-team.jpg

The clear plastic tub with the blue lid was completely filled with gumballs.  I think you can tell what happened.  My team members promptly declared, “God made dirt, and dirt don’t hurt!”  A little bottom-of-the-rented-truck never hurt anybody.  I, on the other hand, used this as an excuse to get rid of these gumballs.  I don’t like scraping it off of furniture and picking it out of children’s hair and clothing,  thank you very much.  They’re gone, out of my life!  Sorry, kids.

So, on to the next challenge.  We have one week until our first live KidsPointe performance.  Pray for us!

This weekend I spent some quality time in the current Alive Youth Center which is the future KidsPointe.  Peggy Ensor cut out the outline of the set that I quickly sketched on Friday morning.  Then Don Petty and Melanie Hahn came on Saturday, and we painted the new VIP room and the foam pieces in the windows.  Here’s what that looks like:

I think it looks great!  Things are really starting to come together.  Thanks so much to Peggy, Don and Melanie for the help, and thanks to their families for letting us borrow them.

Wild First Wednesday March 6, 2008

Filed under: KidsPointe — beckyray @ 9:44 am

Last night was our “First Wednesday” service, a service designed for deeper worship than the average Sunday morning.  I have to trust that this is the case because, just like Sunday mornings, I am with the kids.  And I have to tell you, last night was rough.  I have a few guesses as to the reason why, but the kids are just 20 times more unruly on First Wednesdays than they ever are on Sunday mornings.  Maybe it’s because they’ve already been at school all day, and they’re tired of behaving.  Maybe it’s because First Wednesday usually keeps them up past their normal bedtime.  Whatever it is, I had a lot of trouble getting control.  I kept threatening that if I could not get their attention, they would have to write the KidsPointe rules (my version of “writing sentences” – my punishment of choice).  Finally I had threatened it so many times that I thought to myself, “Okay, I’m going to have to do it.”  After a chaotic game, a frequently-interrupted story and a messy snack, it was time to set up for craft time.  I gave one final plea; “If you cannot sit quietly for three minutes while we set up the craft, you will be writing the rules.”  They couldn’t do it.  I grabbed a tablet of paper and a box of pencils, and I slowly passed out a paper and a pencil to each child.  As I went around, some would ask questions.

Child: “Are we going to draw something?”

Me: “No, you’re going to write.”

Child: “What about me?  I didn’t do anything!”

Me: “Everybody has to write. ”

As I continued around the tables, I could hear whispering.

“She’s not really going to make us write the rules.”

“She’s just trying to scare us.”

Once everyone had a piece of paper and a pencil, I pointed to the big poster of the rules on the wall.  “There’s the rules.  Start writing.”

With disbelief they all started pushing those pencils.  There were some that are very young and have probably never written a complete sentence in their life.  For these little ones I offered the option of drawing pictures to represent the rules, but they all opted to give the writing a shot.  Some tried to buck the system, postponing the inevitable by asking questions.

“Does this have to be cursive?”

“If I get to the bottom of the page, what do I do?”

“Can I get a drink of water?  Can I go to the bathroom?  Can I make a paper airplane?”

Finally, for a moment, all I heard was the scratching of pencils against paper.  I took the opportunity to give a speech – you know the drill.  Disobeying the rules hurts everyone, we could have more fun if I don’t have to waste time getting everyone’s attention, et cetera, et cetera.  I decided that I would let them write for about ten minutes, or until I felt some sense of calm in the room, whichever came first.  So it was about ten minutes. Then we moved on to the craft.

Then there’s the ones that are actually excited about the prospect of writing sentences for the rest of the evening.  Their eagerness almost negates the idea that this is a punishment.  But since these are the ones that were the best-behaved anyway, I let it slide.  “Sure, you can keep writing the rules instead of doing the craft.”  Whatever.

The rest of the evening was a little better, but there were a few that still did not get the message.  Thank God for Veggie Tales.  I’m hoping that typing this all out will help me to let go and move on.  Maybe next month will be better.

Salvation Morning February 17, 2008

Filed under: KidsPointe — beckyray @ 3:49 pm

Joy really does come in the morning!  I needed something good to happen today after the weekend I had.  The KidsPointe lesson today was about salvation, and the children were led to pray to receive Christ if they wanted to.  Several kids repeated the prayer aloud or raised their hands to say that they prayed the prayer in their hearts.  It’s always a good idea to confirm what’s going on in a child’s mind when this happens, but all the parents were told, and I think there were some genuine decisions going on.  Hearts are hearing and minds are learning, even when it feels like the message is getting crowded out with other noise and commotion.  Of course ten minutes later I had to rescue a child that was being held captive in the cabinet by an older child.  Oh, well, it was nice while it lasted.
